Inspired to Give: My Trip to Tanzania with the White Ribbon Alliance
By Tessa Dunning, WRA Member and Midwife
As a midwife working in a busy labor and delivery ward in an inner city hospital, I am often faced with the challenges that can occur during childbirth. However, we are fortunate in this country to have the technology, expertise and resources to ensure women birth their babies in a safe environment with support, information and dignity. Worldwide, this is not the reality for every woman.

Throughout my midwifery training I became passionate about maternal health and committed to raising awareness about the issues faced by mothers worldwide. I spent two weeks with Rose Mlay of the White Ribbon Alliance Tanzania, witnessing the work of the organization, as well as working with midwives at the Temeke Municipal Hospital in Dar es Salaam. We observed the reality and challenges that the incredible midwives and health workers faced on a daily basis. They were assisting approximately 80 births per day, in a labor and delivery ward of 12 beds!
I was inspired by the resilience and strength of Rose and the incredible women I met on my trip and have since been an active member of the White Ribbon Alliance. I have raised awareness by speaking at events and organised fundraising activities.
I want to invite you to get involved as well. If you cannot make a donation, please consider organizing a fundraising event in support of this worthy cause.
