If you think the big push in childbirth is something, how about the big push being made by the White Ribbon Alliance to reduce the number of women dying each year due to preventable complications in pregnancy and delivery.
The issue of maternal health was the focus of a book launch event hosted Wednesday by British High Commissioner Howard Drake and his wife, Gill, at Earnscliffe. Childbirth is the biggest killer of young women in many countries.
The book, On Becoming A Mother: Welcoming Your New Baby and Your New Life with Wisdom from Around the World, is penned by Brigid McConville, a director with the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood UK.
On hand was Maureen McTeer, Canadian representative for the White Ribbon Alliance, with her husband, former PM Joe Clark, and their daughter, Catherine Clark.
Guests included women’s health advocate and benefactor Shirley Greenberg, Dr. Jennifer Blake, CEO of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, Dr. Charmaine Roye from the Canadian Medical Association, former Conservative staffer Roseline MacAngus, and Grace Betts from the Diva Foundation.
