News Flash: Facebook VP visits with WRA Nigeria members
February 3, 2014White Ribbon Champion Nicola Mendelsohn took time out of her hectic schedule as Vice President of Facebook in Africa and the Middle East to meet with White Ribbon members in Nigeria this January. White Ribbon Nigeria are campaigning so that women can come to hospitals without fear of abuse, and they recently won the backing of the Minister of Health for training all of Nigeria’s health staff in respectful maternity care. Nicola accompanied White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria Board member Dr. Nanna Chidi-Emmanuel to Adeniyi Jones, a primary health care facility in Ikeja, Lagos. There, Nicola met with health staff, and said she was especially moved by the stories of mothers who were receiving care: “I was really struck by the warmth of the doctors and midwives, and the fantastic mommy kit that each woman is now entitled to thanks to the work of White Ribbon Alliance. We are making real progress, which is a joy to see.”
White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria is leading a campaign to advocate for Respectful Maternity Care, and an end to disrespectful and abusive treatment of women during pregnancy and childbirth.
