News Flash: India Curbs Maternal Mortality
January 8, 2014
Maternal mortality rate in INDIA declined 16% (in 2010-2012 over 2007-2009)! This news reflects the determination of activists over many years to make sure the government acts to save women’s lives. WRA INDIA began in 2001 with a march to the Taj Mahal. One of our earliest achievements was to persuade government to change policy so that auxiliary nurse midwives (and not just doctors) could administer life-saving health care at the village level. That initiative is still rolling forward, and our next steps are to hold state authorities to account for maternal health care through innovative projects such as the use of mobile phones.
