Elena AtevaElena joined the White Ribbon Alliance Global Secretariat in 2016 as the Maternal and Newborn Health Policy and Advocacy Advisor, supported by USAID/Health Policy. In this capacity, she is responsible for facilitating the work of the Global Respectful Maternity Care Council, leading global advocacy efforts to strengthen the midwifery workforce and providing assistance to National Alliances that campaign to improve respectful maternity care and increase support for midwives in their countries.
Elena is an attorney and a human rights advocate from Bulgaria, who has been involved in the movement for respectful care in her home country and throughout Eastern Europe. She is the co-founder of Rodilnitza, a non-profit organization that advocates for women’s rights in childbirth.
Prior to joining White Ribbon Alliance, she was the Eastern Europe Legal Advocacy Coordinator for the international non-profit Human Rights in Childbirth and currently serves on the board of the organization. Elena's work and career has also focused on domestic violence, trafficking, and women's issues in Bulgaria and the United States.
When she is not working, Elena enjoys exploring new lands and cultures, and biking with her children.
