Putting the voice of the citizen centre stage
September 25, 2013
Sarah Brown attended the White Ribbon Alliance breakfast event at the UNGA yesterday to hear our representatives from Tanzania, Nigeria and Malawi speak about how they are pushing their governments to deliver on their promises.
Dr Jasper Nduasinde, a White Ribbon Alliance member and the only surgeon in the Rukwa region of Tanzania, spoke of the lack of basic services in his local health centres. He described how women have to give birth with no water and by the light of a mobile phone.
He joined White Ribbon Alliance to help prevent deaths of women in childbirth and pregnancy. He said these deaths are preventable if the Government keeps its promise to invest in health services for women.
White Ribbon Alliance Tanzania has launched a campaign to mobilise citizens to put pressure on their Government to keep their pledge of providing comprehensive emergency obstetric care in at least half of all health centres.
